You know, I think videogames should be cool
If I were a videogame, we woudn't have so many problems
Remember when videogames were cool? Trick question! They are still cool. And so am I.
Hello, my name is Brendan and I think life should be full of fun, except when it is winter - then it should be full of hardship.
One thing I have noticed about fun is that it often occurs while playing a PC game. Sometimes that is good, such as when you shout "hooray!" or "wow!" at one of the bright flashbangs that goes off in your face before you are executed by a man with a rifle. Sometimes it is quote unquote BAD, such as when you finish the level and are awarded not a single crystal or gem stone.
Did you know?
There is a convicted murderer in my hometown. He plays Call of Duty under the username "gigakiller23" and somehow is still active in matches, even though he is in prison with no access to a games console.
The difficulty comes, I think, when fun is withheld. I once played a computer game with my cousin Conor and he told me - no, promised me - that I would be the next person to hold and use the controller. Unfortunately, this was a falsehood. I would never hold that controller. There are nights when this reality festers within me, and I break out in shivering sweats, wretching with bitterness. I call my cousin Conor and I hang up when he answers. When he texts the next day, asking if I am well, and have I been taking care of myself, I reply that he must be mistaken, that I never called, and that I am busy right now, goodbye.
Crash Bandicoot is a videogame that I have played multiple times, for example, and I have found that it could be mistaken, once or twice, for what they call enjoyment. All this, despite the fact that adulthood has taught me that enjoyment does not exist, except as a kind of formal statement of intent. I enjoy pastries. I enjoy Vietnamese coffee. I enjoy videogames. What else do I possibly enjoy?
Truly, it is an art form that can really make you think.
