Total Playtime is now part of Jank

One subscription, two great sources of PC gaming nonsense

When we launched Jank (nearly six months ago!), we sweetened the deal by offering our paying subscribers access to premium episodes of the Total Playtime podcast. Likewise, those wise and handsome folk who already backed Total Playtime's Patreon were granted entry into the grand (and empty) halls that lie beyond Jank's paywall.

This ouroboros of mutual support cannot continue. The snakes have finished digesting each other. Total Playtime is a permanent part of Jank now and included in your subscription.

If you're a paying Jank supporter, we love you, and we now have a better mechanism for giving you access to Total Playtime episodes. Premium episodes get their own paywalled article, such as last week's episode, within which you'll find an embedded player and a widget offering you the new ability to subscribe to the podcast, with premium episodes included, in your podcast player of choice. If you're currently signed in to Jank, that same widget may appear below, tailored to your present level of access.

If you're a Jank reader but not yet a paying supporter, we love you in a slightly more aloof way, and you'll continue to get fortnightly free episodes, both also via an embedded player in each post, or via your podcast player of choice as seen above. If you already have Total Playtime in your podcast app, you shouldn't need to do a thing. Although if you want to start accessing those premium episodes yourself, you can do so by supporting Jank now.

If you're an existing Patreon backer of Total Playtime, your free access to Jank's paywalled posts has ended, but you can migrate your subscription from Patreon over to Ghost at no extra cost. We can't do this for you and it's a manual process to cancel one and sign up to the other. You can find instructions for what to do over on Patreon itself, including dates after which the Patreon will be switched off.

We're doing this for several reasons. It means Jank readers and supporters get a podcast; it means Total Playtime backers get a website. It means you need to interact with fewer platforms to get all of those things. It means Jonty only has to talk to one accountant. It means I get to nag Jonty when he forgets to post the Total Playtime episodes on Thursday. We think it's a net positive for everyone.

Nothing about Total Playtime will change. It will still be the same unsanctioned buffoonery from Alice, Nate, Jonty and Brendy. It'll just be here instead of on Patreon. You can, as before, find Total Playtime episode discussion on the Jank supporter-only Discord.

Jank is only just beginning and we have much more we want to do. We've already increased the podcasts we produce by 100% in just six months! Imagine how many podcasts we will have two years from now.

It costs money to pay podcast and website contributors, to pay platforms like Ghost, to pay for podcast file hosting and to generate private subscription feeds for premium episodes. Jon, Brendy and I haven't paid ourselves anything yet; all of your money goes back in to Jank to pay for more contributors and directly expands what we're able to publish. We'll be talking more in the weeks ahead about future plans and where your money goes, but if you want to support what we're doing already, consider signing up at a paid tier.

If you can't, and you just want to read and maybe comment on our work, that's great, too. Maybe tell a friend about us? We have a really good podcast now.
